Acupuncture has many uses including:
OM views illness as a result of either depletion or congestion. Depletions are weakness, fatigue, frequent illness, poor digestion or inadequate circulation. Congestions are aches, pain, tension, tenderness, irritability, or swelling. Western medicine has little for nagging or chronic complaints, where acupuncture can often help. The two approaches, eastern & western, are not a substitutes for each other. They're often complementary and can be successfully integrated.
Japanese Style acupuncture is gentle, effective, and doesn't rely on expensive herbs. Originally Japanese men, often blind since WWII, are acupuncturists, and their wives do massage. The herbalist's can see. In TCM a sighted acupuncturist does it all.
How does acupuncture work? We use your body's energy (Qi) to interact with the two polar principles (Yin/Yang) to achieve better health. Within the Yin/Yang framework, we assess 1) "Constituents" Qi, Blood, Moisture, Spirit, Essence. 2) "Organ Networks" Heart, Spleen, Lungs, Liver, Kidneys. 3) "Body Climates" Wind, Damp, Dryness, Heat, Cold. 4) Your narrative & an evaluation the 27 tongue presentations & 18 wrist pulse positions are needed to arrive at a diagnosis and treatment strategy for your unique "pattern of disharmony." We most often treat points along 14 Meridians (6 Yin/Yang pairs & 2 center line pathways).
Visits with therapy take about an hour. We use gentle body therapies, not herbs, for effective results. And we have many no-needle options. We often use "hair thin" solid, pre-sterilized, single-use needles. No-needle options here included acupressure, gwa sha or shiatsu massage, heat or moxa, tapping, NET, nutrition & therapeutic movement. We may opt for an objective lab test to reveal discomfort caused by environmental triggers. A few established patients may be offered half hour sessions for “pain or stress reduction” or "addictions" using National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) protocols.
Would acupuncture conflict with my medications? No, acupuncture is often a part of an overall integrated approach to healing. You continue your western medications. But, if your goal is to reduce medications, we will work with you & your prescribing physician to achieve your goal.
